About the event

BMW Berlin Marathon — a race that at first was organised by a group of runners from a running club is now part of Abbott World Marathon Majors and one of the world’s best and biggest running events, gathering athletes of the highest calibre on its course, who continue to break record after record.

But records aren’t the only thing broken as part of this marathon’s history. In September 1990, after the collapse of the Berlin Wall and three days before the reunification of Germany, the Berlin Marathon laid its course through the Brandenburg Gate and both parts of Berlin. Thus, this event was one of the first things that reunited Germany.

As you may come to expect from events of this size, every minute detail has been expertly organised. The course is near impeccable: it’s no wonder that the world’s fastest marathon time has been set 12 times at the Berlin Marathon. This includes the current record set by the legendary Eliud Kipchoge, one of the all-time superstars of the running world.

The appeal is obvious: being able to run alongside the titans of this sport and along the beautiful course with a long and meaningful history.

At its inception in 1974, the marathon only toured the western part of the city which was then divided by the Wall. Now the race visits the whole city Charlottenburg, Alexander Platz, the Karl Marx Allee, several museums and government buildings in former East-Berlin.
The finish line is located under the Brandenburger Gate.

It was my first from many marathons which are yet to come. Very flat and fast track, and beautiful route. The roar of the crowd cheering the runners after turning the last corner and entering Unter der Linden is amazing. Not to mention running through Brandenburg Gate. Unforgettable.

You can see all the amazing historical places within berlin and the crowd are very good cheering you up all the way to the finish line. They even included a massage stop for every runner who wanted to have it. A really wonderful experience...did twice already 2017 & 2018.

Its not that tough since its flat all the way...again its the crowd that really inspires you to keep going. A good pick for all the marathoners if you want to get an incredible experience. Be there!!!

One the fatest marathons. Very good expo. Good organisation. The route is perfect to reach a new PR. A lot of people cheering.

Had a difficult race and was disappointed with my performance as this course is pan cake flat. The expo was chaotic and also trying to get into the correct starting pen was a nightmare. I will need to race this course again and improve my performance.

The Berlin Marathon is the cheapest of the majors to compete in when living on mainland Europe and a great way to experience the magnitude of such an event. Sure you have a ballot but even if you don't get in that way, it is still pretty cheap to book this marathon via a marathon travel agency. On Friday and Saturday the city center buzzes with marathon runners from across the globe. You feel this is a biggie ... and you are about to take part in it. Picking up your bib is very smooth. Leave it up to the Germans to organize something in an orderly way. On race day the starting area will take some time to reach by foot when you approach it from the south side so take that into account. Toilets ... there are lots of them but ... too many runners having the same need at the same time so a lot of them disappear into the bushes to do their thing. Tip: get to your starting block/wave early and you will find plenty of toilets there without long lines in front of them. The race itself is massive. This can have a negative effect on your performance when the course gets smaller and when you run into groups with a pacer. I cannot remember much of the surroundings, except that it was grey and not very spectacular. Lots of spectators though and the last kilometer when you pass under the Brandenburger Tor is very cool. Getting back to your hotel will probably take some time but hey ... you've got that precious piece of medal hanging around your neck so who cares ;-)

Fabulous city marathon; well organised, great expo, wonderful music and bands on the route. Worth the trip to this great city.

Marathon takes you though the main sights of the city, pity it misses the east side gallery.

I'm very disapointed because Berlin is a Major. The route is flat but this marathon has nothing exceptional. The exhibition is correct. The atmosphere is cold exept the last 4 km.

I participated in Berlin four times. It is the only City marathon I ever repeated, and I think that says a lot about the quality. In comparison to all other European marathons where I started Berlin has the best atmosphere. There are about one million spectators at the course, which help the runners intensively by cheering them through the race. However, the race is very crowded, so you should not hope for a personal best as long as you cannot start in one of the first groups. If you go to Berlin, do not miss to stay there at least three nights. Get your runner´s bag and the bib on Friday, enjoy the huge friendship run on Saturday, participate in the marathon on Sunday and meet many other runners from all over the world in the evening, where most runners walk around with the medal around their neck. In opposite to many other marathon cities you have the chance to speak to other participants after the race, because many people come from far away and stay in Berlin for more than one day.

Iconic marathon through an awesome city, but with a few gripes: too many slower runners starting in the first waves. I started in wave D and had to pass walkers throughout the whole marathon. Organization needs to check expected running times better, ask for confirmation or put them at the back! Also amazing how many pedestrians were allowed to cross our path, this was unsafe!

This has to be my favourite of the 6 major marathons. I have done it in 2018 and 2022. Flat course, brilliant support, very well organised from start to finish.

Lot of Vibe, actions from organizer and great atmosphere from fans! Great Expo. 5 stars despite the below: Didn't like the fact that at water stations the container was a plastic cup and not a bottle. Half of water was spilled ... The expo could be opened sooner to distribute runners even more. Queue was endless in almost all exhibitors.
