"I am thankful and humbled to be recognized at this year’s Kiwanis 5k run. It has been a blessing and an honor to represent my community of Prospect and all of Robeson County. I first want to thank God for allowing me to be a servant. Lately, my motto has become “Don’t Stop, Don’t Quit” and “Moving is Moving,” so I pray I can keep moving. Robeson County and Prospect is my home. I am married to a wonderful man, Jimmy Bullard, who is my biggest supporter. I have two sons and five grandchildren. I am an active member at Island Grove Baptist Church, where I love working with the children in Sunday School classes, Vacation Bible School, and helping with our Mission trips. I attended Prospect High School and Robeson Community College, where I received my Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education and UNCP in Health Promotions.
My years of service may seem small in comparison to others, but it is one I am blessed to be able to do. I worked for the Public Schools of Robeson County, where I served for 28 years working with special needs children. Upon retirement, I continue to work with special needs, where over the past ten years, I have served as a coach for the Special Olympics. As a current member of our local running group, “Pembroke Runners," we have hosted a number of Fun Runs to raise money or collect goods for our schools or individuals in need. These runs include Backpack Buddies Run, Jingle Bell Run, to collect coats for kids, and a Breast Cancer Awareness Run to raise funds for a local cancer survivor. I have a certification as an exercise leader for all ages, and I currently work with the Lumber River Council Governments Meals on Wheels nutrition program as a site manager. I have worked with Southeastern Fitness Center as an exercise Tech and Programs Coordinator. I also volunteer with Hospice, and for four years have volunteered with Indian Education during the summer school PE session.
Robeson County is filled with wonderful servants to our community, and we are all very thankful for the many selfless acts that are done each day. Let us not stop, for it is what keeps hope alive. I have combined my love for helping others and running and have met many wonderful people along the way. These people have helped me to keep moving and to complete many of the missions I have set out to complete. I am thankful for the support they give. This love for running has helped me conquer three marathons, four half marathons, and numerous other races, and to give back in so many ways. I can only l hope to inspire others and, at the same time, help to make our community better."
