About the event
Mark your calendars, this is a fun, fast, high spirited ride begins from Brooklyn’s Prospect Park for a one way trip to the Montauk Lighthouse for 125 mile, mostly flat course. There will be three rest stops, roughly 40 miles apart providing hydration and nutrition. This is a one way trip departing from Prospect Park with speeds averaging between 19-25+ mph.
PLEASE know your average, especially if you are taking the bus. There is a cut off to arrive in Montauk for those taking the bus.
Keeping the same infrastructure as last year, there are some updated changes to make this ride happen. This is a long message but it's full of valuable information so you have a safe & successful ride.
Registration: Every single rider MUST register. Tiered pricing has been modified to accommodate different levels of support and cover the increase in operating costs to host Montauk. This ride is insured by USA Cycling (USAC) and we must adhere to their guidelines for a ride of this size and distance. If you choose NOT to register, Major Taylor Iron Riders is NOT responsible for you and Major Taylor Iron Riders is waived of any responsibility. Without registration, there is no access to aid stations, nutrition, hydration, SAG vehicles and any support they provide. Lastly, no post ride meal or bus ride home. #WeRideAsOne, and everyone must register to protect themselves and the riders around them. Registered riders will be identified by a wristband. Anyone without a wristband, will not receive any services, will be flagged as a non-participant and accepts responsibility for any potential incidents they are involved in. Major Taylor Iron Riders will not be responsible for these individuals.
Post ride drop off locations: The usual drop off locations, Long Island and Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Slightly different location for Brooklyn. Long Island participants will have the option of storing their bikes under the bus this year. If you opt in, please bring two blankets to wrap your bike safely. The chartered bus: There will be a chartered bus for the return. The bus has limited seating so if you plan on taking the bus, sign up early. The bus has a strict cleaning procedure before and after each charter. If you have any concerns, feel free to email us at [email protected] Ride Meal: There will be a catered meal provided for all registered riders and any pre-registered and approved MTIR volunteers. Bands will be issued the morning of the ride. No band. No post ride meal. No SAG. No aid stations. No fun. There will be vegetarian items too!Personal SAG Vehicles: A ride this big requires reliable SAG vehicles. The safety of the cyclists is in your hands & you make this ride possible! Personal SAG vehicles have been allowed on this ride for individuals/teams. MTIR will continue to allow personal support under the condition they are prepared to support and will assist ANY registered cyclist in need - not just their individual/team. The driver must register (free of charge) and attend a mandatory volunteer meeting on Thursday, September 5th at 7:30 pm. During this call, the SAG team will meet each other and game plan for the big day. There are a few locations that we will need to talk through for the safety of the riders. SAG vehicles will be provided with a sign to place in an identifiable location on the vehicle. i.e.: back/side window. This will be helpful for cyclists to identify who you are. All drivers must share their phone numbers for communications. Personal SAG vehicles are not permitted to ride alongside their team/individual. This will prevent the traffic jams and the safety of the cyclists along the narrow, two lane roads. Any personal SAG vehicle that fails to provide support for all registered participants, ride alongside their individual/team, will be banned from future Major Taylor Iron Rider Montauk rides. This ban also includes the cyclists associated with that SAG vehicle.Important information before registering:
