ABOUT DEMENTIA FRIENDLY ELMBROOK:

Dementia Friendly Elmbook (DFE) is creating a community where those with dementia will be enabled to live as independently as possible and continue to be engaged in community life.

To create a sustainable Dementia Capable Waukesha County we need to engage communities in the support of persons with dementia and their loved ones.

The three main objectives of Dementia Friendly Elmbrook:

Enrichment – running a memory café program for members of the community that are living with dementiaPublic Education – we provide Business Training through the Waukesha County ADRC that educates the employees of area businesses in how to identify and interact with individuals living with dementiaCaregiver Support – many spouses become caregivers to loved ones living with dementia and can feel ill-equipped, DFE works to provide resources and support to family members of individuals living with dementia

There are over 8,500 people in Waukesha County that have Alzheimer’s disease. Over 70% of people with Alzheimer’s disease live at home and over 20% live at home alone.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. It is a disease that causes memory loss and affects other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life.

Every 67 seconds, someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s disease. By mid-century that number is estimated to increase to one person every 33 seconds.

Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. There is no known treatment or cure for Alzheimer’s.

“Dementia does not rob someone of dignity. It is our reaction to them that does.” – Teepa Snow, Nationally recognized Dementia Care Education Specialist
