About the event
The 136km and 100km Gran Fondo, the 60km Semi Fondo and the 48km Medio Fondo will be held on Sunday 8 September. These rides will be timed but are not a race, so you can choose to challenge yourself for a best time, or take the time to soak in the beautiful surroundings. Stop to take photos, enjoy the experience with family and friends and most importantly, stay safe.
The Port Douglas Gran Fondo courses will take you along Great Barrier Reef Drive between Port Douglas and Palm Cove, while taking in breathtaking views through the palm trees alongside the Coral Sea. This road will be fully closed to traffic to allow you to really enjoy the ride and scenic course.
Other events across the Festival weekend include the Hartley’s to Port MTB Race, Lexus of Cairns Criterium, Hemingway’s Brewery Sprint, Choo Choos FREE Family Ride, Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina Festival Expo, local live music and after party! The perfect excuse to bring the whole family to Port Douglas for a holiday.
While you are here, there are endless experiences to appeal to everyone. Jump on Quicksilver Cruises and snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef, see crocodiles up close at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, cuddle a koala at Wildlife Habitat, explore the Daintree Rainforest on a guided walk through Mossman Gorge, enjoy drinks on sunset at Hemingway’s Brewery, and so much more!

Course highlights
The 100km Gran Fondo departs from Wharf Street, Port Douglas, in front of the Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina. Riders will turn right into Macrossan Street, the main street of Port Douglas, then making another right turn once they meet the magnificent Four Mile Beach. The course then takes the riders out of Port Douglas through the corridor of palm trees lining Port Douglas Road where the course meets Great Barrier Reef Drive, which will be fully closed to traffic in both directions. A short diversion around the quiet country backroads of Mowbray takes the riders past sugar cane fields this region is famous for, crossing over creeks and rivers before arriving back onto Great Barrier Reef Drive. The ride down to Palm Cove is undulating as it hugs the side of the east coast of Queensland. An Aid Station will be located at the 31km mark at the top of Rex Lookout, which has one of the most spectacular views along the course. Feel free to stop, refill your bidons, grab a snack and take some quick photos. Take care on the descent down from Rex Lookout as the corners tighten more than you might expect. The undulations continue all the way down to Palm Cove, where you’ll find another Aid Station at the 50.7km mark, under the palm trees right beside the pristine sandy beaches of Palm Cove. On the way back up to Port Douglas, there is another Aid Station at the 70.2km mark, outside the entrance to Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures (a must-see experience while you are in Tropical North Queensland!), just prior to the climb back up to Rex Lookout. You can then challenge yourself on the KOM/QOM climb up to Rex Lookout. The fastest man and woman to conquer the 1km climb with an average gradient of 4.6% will each receive a prize! To ensure you have plenty of fluids we will have another Aid Station at the entrance of Thala Beach Nature Reserve (amazing accommodation in the rainforest, with some rooms also overlooking the ocean!) at the 80.9km mark. The course will take you back around through Mowbray, before turning left towards Port Douglas on Great Barrier Reef Drive. Those chasing their best time will cross the Timing Finish Point back where the start line was in the morning in front of Choo Choos at the Marina. You will then continue around to the back of Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina where you will see the Finish Arch and Recovery. We’ll have a water sprayer and plenty of cold water ready to cool you down, plus a change tent to get changed. The best news is that Hemingway’s Brewery will be open and right there at the finish line!
