About the event

Join us this May as we kick off the first Race to Zero Carbon 5k and 10k in beautiful Duke Island Park!  The event supports Footprint to Wings, a nonprofit dedicated to righting climate change by bringing people from all walks of life together to reach a net zero carbon economy.  Stick around afterwards for games, food, and festivities featuring solar energy experts, electric car enthusiasts and zero carbon coaching!

We are eco-friendly! All materials are recyclable, reusable, or compostable. Our tech shirts are made from recycled post-consumer waste, and water stop cups are made of compostable material. We are also working to arrange for a solar-powered finish line! Have suggestions for how we can be even more environmentally friendly? Send us an email! [email protected]

How will this work?

The state is the ideal unit of competition. We have 50 of them. All unique. There can be red state solutions, blue state solutions, and wild card solutions toward reaching the goal of net zero carbon.

Each State Team is made up of players (You!) that coordinate at the household, club, corporate, school and local government levels to form specialized teams within the State Team, such as Team Solar, Team Divestment, etc. These special teams work together to achieve the sweet victory of a net zero carbon economy with the best quality of life. Just like any other team, success will come from the power of the players and the quality of their teamwork.

What is Footprint to Wings?

Footprint to Wings (FP2W) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 2014. We are a new voice in righting climate change, and our mission is to create an institution that brings people together from all walks of life to win the Race to Zero Carbon, as fast as possible. Our organization is built around the power of games and the ability of human beings to overcome their differences by working together to win them. Our job is to clarify the game in all its glorious complexity, and to empower and awaken the players, the teams, and the love of this game.

We're writing a Zero Carbon Playbook to deconstruct the game for everyone and help teams make the right plays on their quest for zero carbon. We're also developing Zero Carbon Coaching Clinics that can be taken on the road and tailored to specific communities. Stay tuned via fp2w.org as we roll out the playbook!

What is the Race to Zero Carbon?

The Race to Zero Carbon is an open challenge from us at Footprint to Wings to each of the 50 states to race each other toward a net zero carbon economy. So far, New York and California are in the lead (with emissions of 8.1 and 9.2 metric tons of CO2 per year, respectively). Our own beautiful state of New Jersey is 14th in the running (with emissions of 12.5 metric tons of CO2 per year).

To win the Race to Zero Carbon, we need to develop strategies for reducing our emissions at the individual, community, and state levels. Our goal at FP2W is develop a "playbook" to do just this. And although we're proposing this challenge as a race, it's a contest where everybody wins.
