Every year, the Islandsbanki Reykjavik Marathon takes place in August, in conjunction with Reykjavik Culture Night. This popular event begins and ends in Laekjargata, right in the center of Reykjavik. With four different distances to choose from – marathon, half marathon, 10 km race and the Fun Run (3K) – the race offers an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere for all participants. Approximately 1,500 runners compete in the marathon, and 3,000 in the half marathon, making both races less crowded than similar events. The Reykjavik Marathon is also a great option for families, as the 10k and fun run cater to all age groups and levels. The running conditions are usually ideal during the Reykjavik Marathon, with a flat, smoothly paved course and temperatures in the mid-teens centigrade. Much of the route follows the coastline of Reykjavik and Seltjarnarnes, providing runners with fresh ocean breezes and stunning blue mountains in the background. Joining the Reykjavik Marathon is sure to be a unique and memorable experience.
