Philip Rodney Guishard - Short Biography

Philip Guishard was born on May 2, 1942, and grew up on Cut Road, St. George’s, one of 9 siblings in the Guishard household. Philip attended East End Primary School and The Berkeley Institute.

Philip was an accomplished teacher, and during his career, he taught Physical Education, Geography and Mathematics, in addition to holding positions as Deputy and Acting Principal. He was also the Superintendent of the Junior Training School on Paget Island. He was instrumental in the implementation of the first Government-run After School Programme in the 1980s, which continues successfully to this day.

Philip was a long-standing member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and Richard Allen A.M.E. Church in St. George’s was his church home. In 2010, he was celebrated by the church for his contributions to the Bermuda Education System and the community of St. George’s.

Philip was also a great sportsman. It was while he attended Berkeley that he started to become known for his running abilities. He would watch the older boys run the Mile and know they weren’t serious about it. He started to train and ended up winning the 880-yard race and the Mile every year, holding records in both. This continued through the decades, as he ran countless road races both locally and internationally, including the completion of around 20 marathons, and multiple May 24th Marathon Derbies.

Philip was an experienced sports administrator. Some examples include his time as a football referee, coordinating school events such as cross country running and chairing several race committees. He chaired the International Race Weekend committee from 1987 to 1997. In addition to running the events he would also run in the events.

He was a founding member of the Bermuda Track and Field Association, and a member of the Bermuda Olympic Association since 1988 until his passing. He served on many other sporting organizations and committees, and became the Sports Advisor to the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Recreation in 1993. Philip often served as team manager or Chef de Mission, escorting athletes travelling to the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games, the Pan American Games, and the Carifta Games.

Philip was an active Rotarian, spending time in various positions including President of the St. George’s Rotary Club. Such was his selfless service that he was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

He passed away on 28 August, 2016, and he is missed by his loving family, friends and colleagues.
