About the event

Race Start Time and Location:The Staten Island Triathlon/Duathlon is one of the most anticipated events of the season, drawing over 350 competitors last year. It's not just popular for its expertly crafted course; it's also a tribute to Rocco Laurie, a Vietnam veteran and NYPD officer, who was tragically killed while serving New York City. The race was inspired by Larry Ambrosino, chair of the Rocco Laurie Scholarship Fund, to honor his Mariners Harbor roots and his friend.

This triathlon is an excellent opportunity for athletes training for longer events like the Jones Beach Ironman 70.3. With its expertly designed course, the Staten Island Triathlon is a great way to prepare for a Half IronMan event.

The NYPD ensures the bike course on Father Capodanno Blvd is completely closed off, providing a secure environment for competitors. The water conditions at Midland Beach are generally calm, making the swim segment a suitable challenge. Wetsuits are optional, and lifeguards along with the NYPD Water Patrol are on standby to ensure safety.

On race day, the start time is precisely 7:30 AM at the transition area by the baseball field, located at the west end of Father Capodanno Blvd. Parking is conveniently situated at Lot 9, near Lincoln Ave, close to the transition area. Triathletes will begin their swim a quarter mile east of the transition area, while duathletes start their initial run on the Franklin D Roosevelt Boardwalk by the Comfort Station in the transition area.

Triathletes will return to the transition area after a 400-meter swim. Duathletes will run to the flag poles on the Franklin D Roosevelt Boardwalk before heading back. Both groups will then embark on the 12-mile bike segment. The bike course features a 3-loop route (12 miles), from the baseball field hairpin turn to Sand Lane and back, with each loop measuring about 4 miles. The course is flat with minimal elevation changes.

The race concludes with a 3-mile run for both triathletes and duathletes. Starting from the transition area outside the baseball field, participants will head east on the Franklin D Roosevelt Boardwalk, turn around at the 1.5-mile mark near parking lot 5, and head back to the finish line near the transition area.

Race Distances:
- Triathlon: Swim 400 meters, Bike 12 miles (3 loops), Run 3 miles.
- Duathlon: Run 2 miles, Bike 12 miles (3 loops), Run 3 miles.

Volunteers are essential, needed from 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The races begin at 7:30 AM. Upon arrival, report to Race Directors George or Hunter for your race assignment. Volunteers should not leave until the race concludes and must sign out to receive race credit for future events.

Note: The Staten Island Triathlon/Duathlon is not USAT certified or sanctioned, and a USAT racing license is not required to participate.
