About the event

EMAIL SENT ON 10/31

Greetings, Bill Steers Four Miler participants!

We’re really looking forward to hosting you this Sunday (11/5) at this popular community event, run every year in memory of Dr. Bill Steers, who started this run/walk race over 20 years ago.  Our goal, whether you’re running or walking, is for each of you to have a safe, enjoyable and memorable experience.

Here’s what you’ll need to know for Sunday’s event…

-There is NO pre-race day packet pickup. Your commemorative shirt and chipped race number (very important) will be available for pickup on Sunday morning from 6:45-7:30 at the Foxfield race course off Garth Road (about 10 minutes from Barracks Shopping Center).

-Parking will be available in a designated area on the grass at Foxfield. Please follow the directions of the volunteers.

-You must wear your race number (which contains your computer chip for accurate results) pinned in four corners visible on the front of your shirt or top.

-You may warmup before the event starts on the grass race course but we ask that you not do any running on the roads, driveway or horse race course.

-PortaJohns will be available next to the start area.

-The event starts at 7:45 sharp and everyone will start together at the same time. The Burley Middle School girls choir will be on hand, thanks to longtime friend Craig Jennings, to sing the national anthem just before the start.

-The beautiful course is primarily on grass and features lots of ascents and descents. The first and last miles are the fastest, with the middle two miles having the most challenging hills. Don’t push the uphills but really let it fly on the downhills! Past participants have absolutely loved the scenery and graded their time on this challenging course on a serious curve, saying it is anywhere from 30-60 seconds slower than a comparable terrain road course. Even though the footing is solid throughout (absolutely no roots), due to the grass surface, we still suggest trail shoes or spikes, if you own a pair.

-There will be splits at the half mile, 1, 2 and 3 mile marks. And we will have a water stop (self serve) at about the half way mark.

-Temps look to be in the low 40’s, which is perfect for racing!

-The wonderful docs from The UVa Runners Clinic will be in hand to keep us all safe.

-We will have an awards ceremony at around 8:45. Amy Steers and Dr. Kirsten Greene will be on hand to present the awards. Prizes will be awarded to the overall Top 3 men and women finishers and to the tops in the following age groups: 10 & younger, 11-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 44-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80 and over.

A huge thanks to Kelsey Cox, Gerald Shiflett and the Foxfield Board of Directors for opening this beautiful property for our event. As always, all proceeds will be donated for prostrate cancer research programs at the UVa Urology Department. Thanks so much for your support of this important cause! And don’t forget to turn your clocks back on Saturday evening before going to bed. This will make things much lighter on race morning! Any questions please call us at 434/293-3367.
We can’t wait to see you Sunday morning!
Cheers,
Mark Lorenzoni
Co-Director

Race Start: 7:45am COURSE We are back at beautiful Foxfield this year, for another run or walk along the scenic and smooth grass paths of this iconic venue! Everyone will start together at the same time. DEMOGRAPHICS Ages range from 6-85 and a good percentage of our participants are walkers THE CAUSE
In 2004, Dr. Bill Steers founded the Charlottesville Men’s Four Miler and over the past decade, the race has raised thousands of valuable dollars for men’s health initiatives and ground breaking cancer research at UVA. In April of 2015, the Urology community and University of Virginia mourned the loss of this great man. This year we invite everyone to participate in this event to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer and survivorship research at UVA and to continue Dr. Bill Steers’ vision, dedication and legacy of better health through exercise. All are welcome to the Bill Steers Four Miler this year to help us build a better, healthier future through activity, exercise and innovation.
