About the event

Running an Ultra Marathon in the rolling hills of Tuscany is a dream come true! The Val d'Orcia provides the perfect backdrop, with its ever-changing scenery that looks gentle yet can be quite challenging for the legs and muscles. In designing the route, the organisers have kept in mind the centuries-old journeys of the pilgrims and wayfarers who have walked through this land. Travelling this route will be like being one of these ancient travellers.

The roads that cross the region are the same roads that the Romans used to connect Rome to the Alps, such as the Romea, the Cassia and the Francigena. These pathways have been used by many remarkable people, including Sigeric Archbishop of Canterbury, warriors, saints, and brigands. The fortifications, castles, and medieval churches still visible in the area tell the stories of these bygone travellers.

Interview: Tuscany Crossing Val d'Orcia 100 km

29 Dec, 2016 (Thu)

Credit : Anthony Argentieri Hello, on April 22nd 2017, you’ll be organizing the Tuscany Crossing Val d’Orcia 100 km. Can you tell us where it is located? The Tuscany Crossing is located on southern Tuscany, more precisely in the area of Siena. The most famous places of this area are Pienza, Montalcino, Bagno Vignoni and Bagni San Filippo, little jewels of Tuscany for their architecture, history and food. How old is the race and why was it created? This year it’s the fifth year of Tuscany Crossing. We’ve decided to create the race to give the opportunity to know the natural trail of our Unesco Natural, Artistic and Cultural Park, the Val d’Orcia Park. I think that this area is still unknown for a lot of people in the world and I think that every person will enjoy it. §staticmap(17137,6,800,200) What kind of route have you set up for the runners? How would you describe it? The route is along the major roads that, in Roman period, joined Roma to Oltralpe, the Romea, the Cassia and the Francigena crossed by Sigerico, Archbishop of Canterbury, and many illustrious travelers, warriors, saints and brigands; they left in this area as witness fortifications, castles and medieval churches, still present in the area. We will always run in the beautiful Tuscan countryside on dirt roads and woodland trails, crossing famous villages, climbing up the slopes of Monte Amiata (1,100m above sea level). What are the distances on the agenda? The distance are 103 Km, 50 Km, 15 Km and a 4 runners relay. How many runners do you expect on Saturday morning? We expect to have about 500 runners. What type of runners do you plan to attract? The competition is designed for all types of runners, the characteristics of the path suit to those who want to run fast and to those who want to enjoy the views and places. Credit : Anthony Argentieri At that time of the year, what kind of weather can we expect? The weather in this period of the year is highly variable, it can be sunny or rainy, with temperature from 5° to 20°C. The temperature can be variable also during the same day having a freezing race departure and a warm period during the race. Have you planned festivities around the event? Families can also participate to the event, there will be a walk of 15 km where all participants can join and, after the walk, everyone can wait the runners visiting the stands in the medieval village of Castiglione d’Orcia.. The race finished, what advice would you give a runner who has never been to Castiglione d’Orcia before? A good restaurant, a fancy sightseeing? The area is full of small restaurants with typical tuscan foods, they are all fantastic. You can taste the local dishes as “I Pici”, seasoned pasta, or the typical tuscan salami and pecorino cheese, all drinking fine wines : Brunello di Montalcino or Orcia Rosso. In a single sentence, what would you tell the readers of ahotu Marathons to make them register for the Tuscany Crossing Val d’Orcia 100 km? Come to run in this dream along 103 Km because we organize this race and we have dreamed it for a very long time. We want to show the beauty of our land, which is a reason of pride for all the inhabitants of the valley, who work to make the athletes feel right at home.
