Course highlights

The Ultra Blue Island® race course is a journey through Faial Island's diverse and dynamic landscapes. Each section of the race offers unique challenges and visual rewards, making it an unforgettable experience for every participant. The course is designed to showcase the best of the Azores ' natural beauty, whether it's the volcanic craters, historical paths, lush forests, or majestic ocean views. Caldeira do Faial: One of the most iconic features of the race. This massive volcanic crater offers breathtaking views and a challenging terrain. Running along its rim provides a unique perspective of the island's volcanic origins. Capelinhos Volcano: A testament to the island's dynamic nature, this area features the most recent volcanic eruption (1957-58). The landscape here is stark and moon-like, with volcanic ash and formations creating an almost surreal running experience. Coastal Views: The course offers expansive views of the North Atlantic Ocean. The contrast of the deep blue sea against the lush green landscapes of the island is a constant reminder of the unique location of the race. Ancient Whalers’ Paths: These paths hold historical significance, echoing the island's past whaling activities. Running these routes is like traversing through time, offering a glimpse into the island's cultural heritage. Forest Trails: The route winds through dense, verdant forests, providing shade and a change in scenery. These forested areas are visually stunning and home to diverse flora and fauna. Volcanic Terrain: Sections of the course run over rough volcanic terrain, challenging runners with its uneven and unique surface. This terrain tests agility and endurance. Grasslands and Fields: The course also takes runners through open grasslands and cultivated fields, showcasing the island's agricultural side and providing a different running surface. Coast-to-Coast Experience: For some race distances, like the 42km marathon, participants experience the thrill of running from one coast of the island to the other, encompassing various landscapes. Capelo and Varadouro: These areas are known for their natural beauty. Capelo offers views of lush vegetation and Varadouro, showcasing the striking contrast of black volcanic rocks against the ocean. Finish Line at Capelinhos Volcano: The race culminates at the Capelinhos Volcano, an iconic and dramatic site known for its lunar-like landscape and historical significance due to the 1957-58 eruption. This finish line offers a spectacular and unforgettable conclusion to the race, symbolizing the strength and resilience required to complete such a challenging course. Conclusion Ending the race at the Capelinhos Volcano enhances the overall experience of the Ultra Blue Island® race, making it not just a test of physical endurance but a journey through the rich natural and cultural tapestry of Faial Island. This distinctive finish line leaves a lasting impression, embodying the spirit of adventure and exploration that defines the race.

Our first time participating in a trail run as we are 'asphalt kickers' and had the best time! Of course the Azores are beautiful as are the people in culture and kindness. We did the 25K and I was stressed as I usually run a 10:15 or so and was hoping to finish in 4 hours, BUT, I was not fully prepared for the technical aspect of the trail (stairs, steps, mud) so completed in 5.5 hrs with a available time of 7 hours. Not bad for my first trail run. Would i do it again? Hell Yeah! The sights are astounding; the aid stations (fried chicken, hard boiled eggs, Coke, cake, chips) kept me well fueled, the other runners with their politeness of passing/allowing them to pass on single track and helpful gestures by other runners was just remarkable. Azores are beautiful and much to do on the island of Faial. See you in 2023!

It was grueling as my first trail run.
