Pete's Path -

Pete Sheerer considered himself a healthy man: 35 years old with no health conditions, worked hard in the field of construction, was always on the go and was always helping others.  For two months or so, Pete had been experiencing some abdominal pain.  There was all kinds of thinking behind this pain: I am not eating right; maybe I am allergic to something; it's probably the usual aches and pains that come along with everyday life.  Pete never complained and just went about his days, consulting with his primary care doctor.  He was scheduled to get his gallbladder checked within the month.  But on March 11, 2016, Pete said to his wife, “ I think I have to go to the hospital."  That's when everything came to light, very quickly.

After a night in the emergency room, CAT scans, blood tests, horrible drinks and scopes, Pete was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer.  Within his eleven day hospital stay, Pete underwent surgery to remove the tumor, one foot of his intestine and 14 lymph nodes.  Within a month, he would start a 12-round chemotherapy treatment to prevent any metastasis to other organs.

Now, how does a 35 year old get a colon cancer diagnosis, you ask? Doesn't recommended screening start at age 50, you say?  Pete had no access to one side of his family's history.  When all doctors asked, "does this run in your family?", Pete would answer with an honest "no", because the family he knows has very little to no cancer history.  After testing, he tested positive for the MLH1 genetic mutation, a condition that requires early age screening, makes him prone to not only colon cancer but all intestinal cancers, and requires testing for the rest of his life.  Like Pete, many people do not know their complete family history, preventing most from being approved for early screening.

Pete's story is a good one, one that ends with hope and health.  A year later, Pete is cancer free and considering himself a survivor!

All of Pete’s Path proceeds will go directly to helping the Sheerer Family.
