Nairobi (July 5, 2012) – In just less than three months, on Saturday September 29, adventure-seeking runners from across Europe, Asia and the States will take on the world’s most naturally gifted endurance athletes, running with the Maasai in the second edition of the Assured Alliance Amazing Maasai Ultra. The whole event is truly remarkable: in Kenya’s only ultra-marathon, the fastest runners take home prize live cows and goats. The race course is set in Maasai community lands not far from mighty Mount Kenya. In the days before the marathon, during Race Week (September 24-30th), international participants enjoy game drives and walking safaris, visit Maasai villages and explore the unique local culture. “The Assured Alliance Amazing Maasai Ultra is not only a race. It brings cultures together; it is a whole week of exploration and adventure. All of this makes it a once-in-a-lifetime experience”, say race directors Sarah Edson and Molly Fitzpatrick.

Only few spots left: register now!

Only few spots are left for the six-night “Safari + Race” package. International runners can register on the race website www.amazingmaasaiultra.org. There are the 21km, 42km, and 75km ultra distance options, but all races are physically challenging. Participants need to adjust to the altitude of 1,600 meters above sea level, while the course itself follows trails and open dirt roads, up sloping hills and through flat bush lands. For expats and tourists in East Africa, it is also possible to join just for the weekend of the race (2 nights, September 28-29th).

High school scholarships for Maasai girls

All proceeds of the event go directly to funding scholarships for local Maasai girls through the Amazing Maasai Girls Project, a non-profit organization registered in the USA and founded by the event organizers. “Last year, we were able to raise 25,000 USD and are now financing 4-year high school scholarships for 20 bright girls who would not be able to afford school otherwise. This year’s goal is to raise even more, to press ahead and get more girls into high school”, outlines Molly Fitzpatrick.
