German runner Raphael Igrisianu takes top place in the 2013 Cyprus Marathon

More than 500 runners took part in the 2013 Cyprus Marathon (Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km Road Race) which was organised successfully on Sunday 10th March 2013 at Pafos city. The Marathon course started from Petra tou Romiou (Birthplace of Aphrodite goddess of love and beauty) and finished at the Pafos Mediaeval Fort Square. The other two races (Half Marathon & 10 km Road Race) started and finished at the Pafos Mediaeval Fort Square. The Marathon departed at 7:30 a.m. followed by the Half Marathon and the 10km at 8:30 a.m. Mr. Chrysanthos Savvides (Chairman of the Municipal Youth Council of Pafos Municipality) fired the starting gun for the Half Marathon and 10 km Road Race. A warm-up session was held before the start of the Half Marathon & 10 km races from personal trainer Mr. Marcos Louca.

The number of runners that participated indicates the big impact of the event, as most of the runners came from abroad, especially to participate in the international sports event. There were runners from more than 20 different countries such as England, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Hungary, Belgium, Austria, Netherlands, Poland, Denmark, Lebanon, Russia, USA, Australia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Jordan, South Africa and Cyprus. There were also quite a few runners who participated in the Marathon to raise money for charities.

The German runner Raphael Igrisianu (Don Marathon Running) won the 2013 Cyprus Marathon in a time of 2:44:50 followed from the British runner Tim Artus in 2:50:25. The British runner Ed Knudsen (101 Battalion) crossed the Marathon finish line in third place with a time 2:51:28. The British lady Victoria White (Epikopi Runners) was first in the Marathon women category with a time 3:20:53 followed from the Ukrainian woman Tetyana Loskutova (Sunninghill striders) in a time of 3:54:22. The Finland lady Niina Sallinen crossed the Marathon finish line in third place with a time of 3:56:25. The Cypriot runner Charalambos Georgiou (Dro Me A Racing) won the Cyprus Half Marathon in a time of 1:21:30 followed in the second place from another Cypriot runner Konstantinos Konstantinides (Apollon Lympion) with in a time 1:21:32. The British lady Rasa Kavaliauskaite (Running Crazy) won the ladies race with the time of 1:33:17. Second lady in the Half Marathon distance was Dutch lady Jacqueline Bastiaan clocking 1:42:34. The male winner of the Cyprus 10km Road Race was the British runner David Branfoot with a time of 34:41 and the female winner was Cypriot lady Carmen Macheriotou with the time 44:43.

Each participant who finished the Cyprus Marathon 2013 was given a quality, commemorative Castrol T-shirt and a medal. deVere Group (Cyprus) sponsored the awards which were given to the first three runners in each of the 48 age group categories. After the races the Organisers offered to all participants ample quantities of seasonal fruit, beer, orange juices, electrolytes and mineral water. The runners and spectators were entertained with traditional Cypriot folklore dancing from the Dance Group ‘Ieri Kipi’ and the Cyprus Morris Dancers. The Pafos Municipality Band was performing a variety of music while runners were crossing the finish line. Overall it was a great fun day and really rewarding to all runners who crossed the finish line. It was a real running festival! All in all the city of Pafos produced a spectacular event that heralded not just a few but hundreds of winners. As the many finishers exited Pafos Mediaeval Fort square an overwhelming sense of achievement radiated from the Fort.
