Over 400 athletes participated in the 39th edition of the §race_link(19097). This year’s half marathon was won by first-time participant Jonathan Atse Herrera, who clocked in at 01:17.14 followed closely by Drew Lang, last year’s winner, who crossed the finished line at 01:17.26. Gozitan Stefan Azzopardi came in third at 01:22.34.
The first lady that crossed the half marathon finish line was Josann Attard Pulis, also winner of this year’s Malta Marathon, at 01:29.50. Following her in second place was Marisa Muscat (01:35.26) and in third place Johanna Calleja (01:36.09).
Jonathan Balzan completed the 8 mile race in 44.57. Darren Fenech was second in at 48.18 while Alexander Schembri was third in at 48.45. Charles Cilia currently holds the record time for both 13.1mi (2006, 1:11.40) and 8mi races (2008, 43.14). Doreen Camilleri once again finished first female in the 8 mile race at 54.13 followed by Gianella Bugeja (55.50) and Tara Abdilla (59.09).
Apart from the half marathon and the 8 mile, the event also included a 13.1 mile mountain bike race, a 4km, 2km and 2km Fun Run.
The 13.1 MTB was won by Kevi Muscat who finished the race in 40.09, followed by Josef Vella (45.18) and Silvio Grima (46.17).
Participants have expressed satisfaction with the organisation of the event, with both seasoned athletes and enthusiasts already planning to participate next year. Next year’s event will be taking place on Sunday 26th April.
The Gozo Half Marathon Organising Committee lies within the Xaghra Youth Centre and is being proudly supported by Xaghra Local Council, Ministry for Gozo, Malta Tourism Authority, San Michel and Gatorade.
