Tromsø, Norway is known for its wild and lively nightlife, as well as its stunning snow-capped peaks and amazing scenery. It is the administrative centre of Troms county, and is home to a respected university, the historic Mack Brewery, and more pubs per capita than any other Norwegian city. Plus, there are plenty of cultural bashes, buskers, and an animated street scene. But the real star of the show is the Polar Night Halfmarathon! This annual half marathon running competition has been taking place every year since 2004, in the beginning of January, during the Polar Night-period, when the sun does not rise above the horizon. It is renowned for its torch-lit route, offering participants the chance of running underneath the aurora borealis. You can choose between 42km (new since 2021), 21km, 10km and 5km; however, the marathon isn't for beginners, as you have to prove that you have done the distance in less than four hours over the last two years to sign up. So if you're looking for a wild and unique challenge for your bucket list, Polar Night Halfmarathon is the place to be!
