For the past 24 years, the Reykjavik Spring and Autumn Marathons have been a part of Reykjavik's history. Held on Saturday, the third day of summer, the Spring Marathon is the first race of the season. Summer may not have arrived yet in Iceland, but the sunny and pleasant temperatures make for perfect running conditions. The event is kept small and intimate, allowing for a friendly atmosphere. After the race, runners are invited to enjoy warm waffles with cream and jam, as well as coffee and other drinks. The course for the Reykjavik Marathons takes runners through the most scenic parts of the city, away from the street traffic. Starting in the Elliðaárdalur valley in the east, runners make their way through Fossvogur valley, along the seaside south of the city, and up to Öskjuhlíð hill. The route passes Nauthóll, a beach heated by geothermal water, and the western part of the city before returning to the start. The entire course is 10.5 km, mostly flat with a few small inclines, and only crosses two streets. Experience the wonders of Iceland and join in on the Reykjavik Marathons!
