The Salomon Hengill Ultra Trail is returning for its eleventh edition on June 3 and 4, 2022. Last year, over 1,300 competitors participated in the event, making it the largest off-road race in Iceland. Participants can choose from 5km, 10km, 26km, 53km, and 106km tracks, as well as a newly added 160km route that is equivalent to 100 miles. This upcoming summer will offer new versions of the 10km, 26km, and 53km tracks with limited spots for participants. The Midnight versions of these tracks will start at 10 PM on June 3 and will have only 100 spots available in the 26km and 53km races, and 200 spots in the 10km track. The starting field and competition committee will be located at Skyrgerðin, a restaurant and guesthouse in Hveragerði. The shorter distances will take runners around Hveragerði and up to Hamrin, a stunning lava hammer above the town. The 25km race will take runners up Reykjadalur to Ölkelduhnjúkur and back. The 50km runners will take a different path, running to Hengill, over the mountain range, down Sleggjubeinsskarð and return to Hveragerði. 106km runners will do this route twice and 160km runners will repeat the route three times. Hengill offers a unique view that makes this running route one of the most beautiful in Iceland.
