The Geneva Marathon for Unicef unveils its new route

04 Mar, 2011 (Fri)

For the first time ever, the Geneva Marathon for Unicef, now in its seventh year, will provide the runners with a unique route of 42,195km including the most beautiful landmarks of the city as well as Geneva’s historical and cosmopolitan centre and its magnificent countryside surrounding it over the weekend of the 14th and 15th May 2011. Unlike previous editions where participants had to make two loops of the same course, the 2011 route is based on one loop of the new course which for the full and half marathon courses, offers the runners a variation of vistas to help them on their way.

After a first part in the countryside in a stunning backdrop nestled in between the Jura’s crests and the Alpine summits, the participants will dive into the heart of the roads and discover the token monuments of Geneva (the water-jet, the flower clock, the Mont-Blanc Bridge…). They will then run along the Rhône quays and will finally cross the finish line drawn in front of the famous Palais Wilson for a prestigious finale in the heart of the city.

The start of the race will be from Chêne-Bourg and can be accessed directly on the Genevan public transports (Transports Publics Genevois). Parking will also be available near the start area. The Marathon will go through ten villages and cities of the Geneva district: Chêne-Bourg, Thonex, Choulex, Puplinge, Presinge, Jussy, Gy, Meinier, Collonges – Bellerive, Cologny to arrive in Geneva itself. The participants of the semi-marathon will take the same start and will get to the roads before entering the city and cross the finish line at Palais Wilson. These breathtaking running routes will be extremely enjoyable to the running enthusiasts. The new layouts are proof of the long-term commitment of the event organisers to make of the Geneva Marathon for Unicef one of the top 15 of marathons in Europe.

Drawing on the success of the sixth edition, the Organisating Committee of the Geneva Marathon for Unicef maintains for the second consecutive year the innovative format launched in 2010. Four races will be on offer so that the whole family can participate at its own pace in either a full marathon, semi-marathon, 6km race for women named the Genevoise and races for children between 500m and 3km.
