About the event
The Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Marathon is New Zealand’s premier road race, offering a scenic and challenging course that crosses the iconic Auckland Harbour Bridge—a rare opportunity for foot traffic on this landmark. Held each October or early November, this certified IAAF course draws runners from around the globe with its varied distances, including a full marathon, half marathon, 11K Traverse, 5K, and KIDS MARATHON. The course begins in the coastal suburb of Devonport, winds through Auckland’s North Shore, and finishes in the vibrant heart of the city at Victoria Park. Expect panoramic views of the Waitematā Harbour, springtime sea breezes, and a supportive atmosphere energized by thousands of spectators. Since its first bridge crossing in 1992, the race has built a legacy of high-level competition and inclusivity, even managing to host one of the world’s few large-scale marathons during the pandemic. A pre-race expo and bustling finish-line celebrations add to the experience.
