About the event

The Fifth Avenue Mile is one of the most iconic road mile races in the world. Held annually on New York City’s famed Fifth Avenue, this straight, slightly downhill, 1-mile sprint stretches from 80th to 60th Street and draws thousands of runners—from age-group amateurs to Olympic-caliber elites. Organized by New York Road Runners since 1981, the race has hosted multiple national champions and global medalists, making it a rare blend of a NYC community event and world-class competition. With separate heats for various age groups, the atmosphere builds throughout the day, culminating in elite races that consistently deliver headline-grabbing performances. Spectators line the course in the heart of Manhattan, creating a fast-paced, energetic scene unlike any other. Since moving to mid-September, the race often coincides with late summer sunshine and warm temperatures.

She won the 2011 IAAF World Outdoor Track and Field Championships at 1500 meters and returned to take the silver in 2013. In 2014, she captured the IAAF Diamond League series title at that distance.
